Documents Required for Aadhaar Card

Documents required for an Aadhaar card include proof of identity, address, date of birth, and relationship with the head of family, each drawn from UIDAI's approved list. Every applicant must submit original documents, which are scanned and returned on the spot. The exact documents needed vary slightly for children, foreign nationals, and existing detail updates.

You need to submit certain documents when applying for an Aadhaar card. Documents will also be required if you are already enrolled for Aadhaar but need to make certain changes to your existing details.

  1. Identity proof documents (should contain your name and photo).
  2. Address proof documents (should contain your name and address).
  3. Date of birth documents.
  4. Proof of relationship documents (should contain information about the head of the family).

Every document submitted must be currently valid, issued in the applicant's own name, and match the details already on record. UIDAI verifies this either by checking the issuing authority's database or by examining the physical document presented at enrolment.

You will be required to produce the original copies of the documents you wish to submit. These documents will be scanned and returned. There is no need to print and submit photocopies.

Applicants must submit original documents from UIDAI's approved list, which are verified and returned on the spot. The exact combination needed can vary for children, foreign nationals, and update requests.

2. What documents are accepted as proof of identity for an Aadhaar card?

Proof of identity documents for an Aadhaar card must carry the applicant's name and photograph, such as a passport, PAN card, voter ID, or driving licence. 3.What documents are accepted as proof of date of birth for an Aadhaar card?

Proof of date of birth documents for an Aadhaar card include a birth certificate, passport, PAN card, or a mark sheet issued by a recognised board or university. A photo ID card or government letterhead certificate stating the date of birth is also accepted. UIDAI maintains the full list of eligible documents on its website.

4.What documents are accepted as proof of relationship for an Aadhaar card?

Proof of relationship documents for an Aadhaar card establish the applicant's connection with the head of the family and are mainly needed for dependants without independent identity or address proof. Accepted documents include a birth certificate, PDS card, government-issued marriage certificate, or a family entitlement document. These documents must clearly mention both the applicant's and the head of family's names.

5.What documents are accepted as proof of address for an Aadhaar card?

Proof of address documents for an Aadhaar card must carry the applicant's name and current address, such as a passport, bank passbook, ration card, or a recent utility bill. Several other certificates, statements, and government-issued cards are also accepted as address proof. UIDAI publishes the full list of accepted documents on its website.

6.What documents are required for a child's Aadhaar card?

Documents required for a child's Aadhaar card include identity proof, address proof, a birth certificate, and one parent's Aadhaar card. Children under five years are enrolled through the Head of Family route and are exempt from providing biometric data until they turn five. This enrolment process is often called Baal Aadhaar.

7.What documents are required for an OCI cardholder to get an Aadhaar card?

An OCI cardholder needs a valid OCI card along with a valid foreign passport to apply for an Aadhaar card, provided they have resided in India for at least 182 days in the preceding year. These two documents together serve as proof of identity for the application. Additional address proof may be requested depending on the enrolment centre.

8.What documents are required for Long Term Visa holders to get an Aadhaar card?

Long Term Visa (LTV) holders need a valid LTV document along with a valid or expired foreign passport from their country of origin to apply for an Aadhaar card. This route applies to minority communities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Together, the documents establish both identity and eligibility for enrolment.

9.What documents do Nepalese and Bhutanese nationals need for an Aadhaar card?

Nepalese and Bhutanese nationals need a valid passport of their country to apply for an Aadhaar card. If a passport is unavailable, any two documents sharing the same address, such as a citizenship certificate or a mission-issued photo identity certificate, can be submitted instead. These alternate documents must be current and verifiable.

10.Can an NRI apply for an Aadhaar card?

Yes, a non-resident Indian (NRI) can apply for an Aadhaar card using a valid Indian passport, whether an adult or a minor. The application can be made at any Aadhaar enrolment centre in India. NRIs follow the same document categories as resident applicants: identity, address, date of birth, and relationship proof.

11.What documents are needed to update the address on an Aadhaar card?

Updating the address on an Aadhaar card requires a valid proof of address document, such as a passport, voter ID, ration card, or bank passbook. Only documents from UIDAI's approved proof-of-address list are accepted for this update. The document must clearly show the applicant's name and current address.

12.What documents are needed to change the surname on an Aadhaar card?

Changing the surname on an Aadhaar card requires a valid identity document reflecting the new name, such as a passport, voter ID, driving licence, marriage certificate, or PAN card. UIDAI verifies the submitted document against its approved identity proof list before updating the record. A gazette notification is additionally required for a full name change.

13.Can an Aadhaar card be obtained without any supporting documents?

An Aadhaar card can be obtained without standard supporting documents through the Head of Family (HoF) route or with the help of an introducer approved by UIDAI. This route is typically used by dependants or individuals who lack independent identity and address proof. The HoF or introducer must themselves hold a valid Aadhaar card.

14.Is there a minimum age to apply for an Aadhaar card?

There is no minimum age to apply for an Aadhaar card, and even newborns are eligible for enrolment. Aadhaar cards issued to children under five are linked to a parent's Aadhaar and updated with biometric data once the child turns five. This makes Aadhaar accessible from birth.
